The key to making delicious microwave oatmeal in less than 3 minutes comes down to three things - using milk instead of water, choosing old-fashioned rolled oats (not instant!), and adding a touch of cinnamon and vanilla.

From there you can dress it up any way you want and you are guaranteed to have perfect oatmeal every time.

For a long time, I ate packets of microwave oatmeal every morning believing I was having a healthy breakfast even though I wasn't crazy about the mushy texture and flavorings. I just assumed I was someone who didn't really like oatmeal.

That all changed when I finally started making my own oatmeal at home using old-fashioned rolled oats and adding my own toppings.

Not only was the oatmeal 100 times tastier, but the texture also was so much more appealing. Plus it is more affordable.I could buy a whole container of rolled oats for about the same amount as the 6-8 packets.

If saving money, eating healthy, and enjoying delicious meals are things that interest you, you’ve got to try The Best Microwave Oatmeal. You won’t be disappointed!

Key Ingredients

You will need the following key ingredients to make this delicious breakfast recipe:

  • Rolled Oats: You can use quick oats or rolled oats, but keep in mind the cooking time will differ depending on which one you choose.
  • Milk: I prefer to use unsweetened almond milk in my oatmeal recipes, but you can use any type of milk you like including dairy milk, soy milk, or oat milk. If needed, you could also use water.
  • Cinnamon: This warm and delicious spice is commonly used in oatmeal recipes because of how beautifully it complements the nutty flavor of the oats. Add a pinchof salt as well to make the flavors pop.
  • Vanilla extract: Not only does vanilla extract add a bit of its own flavor, but it also enhances the other flavors in the dish and ties everything together.
  • Optional extras:This is where things get fun! If you like things sweet, stir insome maple syrup, honey, or brown sugar. Add fresh or dried fruit like berries, bananas, raisins, cranberries, or apples. Add healthy fat and crunch with some chopped nuts like walnuts, pecans, or almonds. Get inspired by dessert with chocolate chips andmelted peanut butter.

Flavor Ideas forMicrowave Oatmeal

There are so many ways to customize this easy microwave oatmeal. Try one of our flavored microwave oatmeals -Banana PeanutOatmeal, Apple Oatmeal with Peanut Butter, Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal, or Blueberry Muffin Oatmealor use one of the ideas below.

  • Banana Peanut Butter: The oatmeal I eat most often is a simple combination of bananas and peanut butter. Just mash up a banana in the bowl before adding the oats and then follow the directions as usual. Not only will this sweeten up the oatmeal naturally, but it also makes the oatmeal super creamy and delicious. Add a dollop of peanut butter for one filling, tasty breakfast.
  • Cinnamon Apple: We almost always have apples in the house, so I love making cinnamon apple microwave oats. Start by dicing up an apple. Place it in your bowl and microwave for 60-90 second until it's soft. Then add the oats, milk, cinnamon, and vanilla and you'll end up with oatmeal packed with apple flavor without the need for added sugar or sweetener.
  • Peanut Butter & Jelly: We love peanut butter and jelly so when I am in a rush I top my oats with some no sugar added preserves and a scoop of nut butter. Sometimes I use halved grapes or strawberries instead of preserves to keep the oatmeal nice and light,
  • Fruit and Cream: I love adding fresh fruit to my oats and usually add a scoop of Greek yogurt as well to create creamy oatmeal packed with fruit. This also ups the protein content of the oatmeal to keep you full all morning.
  • Pumping up the nutrition: To pack even more nutritional benefits into your morning oats, I almost add a teaspoon of chia seeds and flax meal to my oats. Sometimes I add protein powder as well, especially when I know I have a long morning and need lots of energy

How long to cook oatmeal in the microwave?

Here are the general guidelines for cooking oatmeal using the microwave. Cooking time will vary based on the type of oatmeal and the strength of your microwave.

  • Quick-cooking oats: Cook on high for 1.5-2 minutes.
  • Rolled or old-fashioned oats: Cook on high for 2.5-3 minutes.
  • Steel-cut oatmeal: Generally, it isn't recommended to cook steel-cut oats in the microwave since they take significantlylower to cook. Here is how to cook them on the stovetop.

How to Store Microwave Oatmeal

Let’s say you pop some oatmeal in the microwave for your youngster, only to find out that they are in a mood and will absolutely not eat anything but cereal.

What do you do with that poor, delicious oatmeal? You save it, of course!

Oatmeal holds up really well both in the fridge and in the freezer. Simply let it cool to room temperature, then transfer it to an airtight storage bag or container.

Once properly contained, you can store cooked oatmeal in one of two ways:

  • In the fridge for up to 4-5 days.
  • In the freezer for up to 3 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about this dish:

How do you make microwave oatmeal without it boiling over?

The easiest way to make sure your oatmeal doesn’t boil over is to use a larger container than you think you need. When you use a small container, the milk or water tends to bubble over and spill out of the container during the cooking process. Another good option is to cook the oatmeal in 30-second increments, giving it a quick stir every 30 seconds.

Are microwave instant oats as healthy as rolled oats?

Yes! Instant oats and rolled oats are the same grain, so they are equally as healthy. The only difference between the two is how they are processed. Rolled oats are flattened out for quick cooking, while instant oats are pre-cooked and dried for even quicker cooking.

How can I meal prep this oatmeal?

Even though this is a 3-minute recipe, sometimes I like to make a double or triple batch and store the leftovers in the fridge for an even easier breakfast. These oats will keep well in the fridge for 3-4 days. To reheat, add a touch of milk and stir. Then reheat for 30-60 seconds until heated through. For freezer oatmeal meal prep, try these Frozen Oatmeal Cups.

Do you use milk or water to make oatmeal?

This is entirely based on your own preference! Everyone is different. Personally, I love making my oatmeal with milk because I find that milk makes it creamier. However, water will work perfectly fine too.

What are the best oatmeal toppings?

The best oatmeal toppings are whatever you want them to be. Truly! Some of my favorite choices include fresh fruit, dried fruit, chopped nuts, seeds, nut butter, and Greek yogurt. The options are basically endless, so you can switch it up every time you make oatmeal in the morning.

Notes

Make sure to cook this in a microwave safe dish that is deep and won't bubble over. Oatmeal bubbles and can make a large mess in the microwave if the container is too small.

I am looking forward to trying this recipe! ...at night, lol. I found out oats have naturally occurring melatonin so I quit eating oats in the morning. I also noticed I'd have a brutal midmorning crash whenever I'd eat oats/oatmeal. I switched to a more savory meat, cheese, eggs type breakfast and no more crashes! Apparently, some people, including me, have a sensitivity to grass foods. Oats, wheat, and barley are grasses. If this is you, try switching to a breakfast with no grains that includes a protein and vegetables (kimchi is great for breakfast). Thanks for letting me share my two cents, happy sleeping!

Just what I needed! Thank you! I ate steel cut oats daily prepared in large batches in a slow cooker with milk, for years and got so tired of them. Rolled oats have a different flavor and texture. I'm so happy to have rediscoverd them!

Using a Sharp 1200 watt Carousel microwave I have had the best results using the beverage setting for just over the oatmeal recipe volume. For this recipe the 1.5 cup beverage setting cooks and does not boil over. For a 3/4 half recipe try the 1 cup beverage setting on your microwave.

You must put this in a very large bowl, or yes, it will overflow. This came out kind of runny at first but then when it cooled it became the perfect consistency. I love to double the cinnamon, add frozen berries for taste and to cool, and a tablespoon of ground flaxseeds. Yum!

My new favorite way to make oatmeal in the microwave. So much better (and cheaper) than the packets. Usually I add some fruit and I top everything with yogurt.

I tried this and the oatmeal overfilled the bowl and made a large mess in my microwave. Make sure to microwave in about 30 second bursts, not for 3 minutes at a stretch. At least not in a high-powered microwave.

Sorry to hear this! It's important to use a large bowl so that the oats don't overflow during cooking. I am going to add a note about this to the instructions. Thanks for the feedback.

FAQs

Why does my oatmeal keep overflowing in the microwave? ›

Oatmeal tends to overflow when the water boils and bubbles appear, while at the same time, the starches in the cereal swell and form a gel. This viscous gel makes it difficult for the bubbles to escape, causing the oatmeal to rise up and eventually spill over.

Is microwaving oatmeal less healthy? ›

There is no evidence that microwave cooking harms your health.

How to make Quaker Instant oatmeal in the microwave? ›

Microwave. Combine water or milk, salt and oats in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on HIGH 1-1/2 to 2 minutes; stir before serving.

Is microwave oatmeal better with milk or water? ›

Make microwave oatmeal with milk, instead of water. The milk makes porridge creamier, richer, and more satisfying. Experiment with extra mix-ins and toppings, the ones you like the moist. I recommend sliced bananas, peanut butter, and a generous sprinkle of cinnamon.

Should I cover oatmeal in the microwave? ›

Like any starchy grain, rolled oats have a tendency to boil over in the microwave if you're not careful. Start with an uncovered Large Deep dish to avoid spillover when microwaving rolled oats. If you cover the dish with the lid, the cooking liquid will become too hot and create too much pressure.

How do you thicken microwave oatmeal? ›

Let the oats stand for 2 to 3 minutes to thicken: After letting them stand a few minutes, give the oats a stir. The oatmeal should become thick and creamy as you stir. If it still seems more liquidy than you'd like, microwave for another 15 to 30 seconds, but be very watchful for foaming liquid.

Does microwave damage oats? ›

(A 40g serving of porridge oats contains 2g of beta-glucan.) There's nothing wrong with microwaving porridge, especially if you are in a rush in the morning. Instant porridge is fine if you stay away from flavoured or sweetened versions.

Which is healthier instant oatmeal or regular oatmeal? ›

"It's a common misconception that one type of oat is healthier than another," said Rizzo. "They are all actually identical in terms of their nutrition. The difference is how they are rolled and cut." However, Price added that since instant oats are the most processed option, they generally have salt and added sugars.

Is Quaker microwave oatmeal good for you? ›

Just like rolled oats and steel cut oats, instant oatmeal is a nutrient-dense whole grain with many health benefits. Instant oats are a good source of carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They also deliver a good amount of protein and fat.

Is instant oatmeal inflammatory? ›

Oatmeal has anti-Inflammatory properties.

Any type of oats — steel cut, rolled or instant — provide health benefits, but the best of the best are steel cut oats since they are the least processed, offer a touch more nutritional value and are the lowest on the glycemic index.

What is the difference between quick-cooking oats and old-fashioned oats? ›

Both types of oatmeal start out as oat groats. The main difference between old-fashioned oats and quick oats comes down to how they are processed and the resulting shape, texture, and cooking time.

Is it better to cook oatmeal with water or milk? ›

Simple tip #1: Make oatmeal with milk (or a non-dairy alternative) versus water. Not only does oatmeal made with water taste way less delicious, but you're also missing out on the extra protein staying power that milk will add to the breakfast. Water will also make the oats more gummy instead of creamy.

Are old-fashioned oats the same as quick oats? ›

Old-fashioned oats and quick-cooking oats are basically interchangeable, although they will slightly change your final dish. If you're substituting old-fashioned oats for quick-cooking oats, your final dish will be chewier, and it might taste a little oat-ier.

Is it better to cook oats in microwave or stove? ›

There is a major flavor difference. Stove top oatmeal has a much better flavor and texture than microwave oatmeal that has been ripped to pieces from the extreme vibrating of excited water molecules. There are no nutritional differences between the two cooking methods.

Do you microwave oatmeal covered or uncovered? ›

For steel cut oats, Combine ½ cup steel-cut oats, 2 cups water, and a pinch of kosher salt in a large bowl. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and microwave on high for 5 minutes. Stir, cover again, and microwave for another 5 minutes.

How long do you put water in the microwave for oatmeal? ›

Put the oatmeal you want into a microwave safe cereal bowl. Add about 1/3 cup regulation or old fashioned oatmeal, along with about 1/2 cup water, and add some apples or dried fruit, and/or cinnamon, if you like. Cook it on high for 2 to 3 minutes. If needed, stir in more water.
