This time of year is full of magic for me. It is a time of year that we share smiles on the street and want to show our love for our loved ones. The way I like to show my love and appreciation for my loved ones is with gifts that are homemade and almost always edible. These Easy Chocolate Bark Bars are such a simple gift to make and really don’t take much time either. But the result is fantastic, completely delicious and greatly appreciated.

It really couldn’t be simpler to make these simply line a baking tray with reusable parchment, pour in melted chocolate then top with designs of your own choosing. One really fun way of using these easy chocolate bark bars is as place names for your festive table. You could melt white chocolate and pipe names on the bars.

This is one of those gifts that are children will really enjoy making. I find that anything that you can make and see the results instantly are perfect for cooking with kids. You can set out a tray per child and let them go wild with the toppings. Such fantastic presents to give with a personal touch. This time of year is perfect to get the family together making presents. It could become a tradition that brings the magic of Christmas to your family.

I like to make them into bars as I like designing scenes on the top. Using different toppings to add not only texture but flavour. The pretzels will add salt for example or candy canes bring mint. Each bar can have its own personality that can be tailored to each recipient. If you wished you could easily make this into bark shards. Simply put all your topping on and allow to harden then smash up into pieces. This is great fun and another way to enjoy chocolate. Although there is no wrong way to enjoy chocolate.

Other gifts that you can make to celebrate the season are:
Three Ingredient Fudge
Rocky Road Christmas Pudding
Brown Sugar Shortbread
Mince Pie Baklava
Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

Course Baking, Dessert, Party Food

Cuisine American, British

Servings 3 Bars

Calories 712 kcal

Ingredients

  • 350 grams Milk Chocolate

Toppings of Choice

  • Candy Canes, Pretzels, Breadsticks, Sprinkles, Chocolate Chips (Whatever you wish)

Any Flavourings You Want

  • Salt, Orange Zest, Peppermint, Chilli (If you like)

Instructions

  • LIne a baking tray with reuseable baking parchment.

(Leaving a bit of over hang or a tab that you can use to lift out the bars)

  • Break up your chocolate and place in a heat safe bowl. Now melt.

You can do this in the microwave for blasts of 30 seconds stirring inbetween each.

Or you can place over a small saucepan of simmering water making sure the water does not touch the bottom of the bowl stirring to melt.

If you wanted to add flavourings to the chocolate now is that time. I like having milk chocolate and having the toppings add different flavours.

  • Pour the molten chocolate into the lined baking tray and spread to cover.

You want to give it a good few bangs on the work top to get rid of the air bubbles that will have formed during spreading.

  • I use breadsticks to seperate the sheet into three individual bars. This makes portioning easier and decorating simpler. You can also change the flavours of each bar with the toppings.

Now have fun and use the toppings as you wish. I think simple graphic designs are super effective. Make sure you press each decorative item into the chocolate to make sure it sticks in.

  • Once you are happy with the designs then allow to chill down and stash in the fridge to completely harden.

Once completely hard you can unmold and give to your loved ones or enjoy it yourself. If you wish to cut it you can cut into bars.

Notes

Quick Tip

If you lay out your toppings on the baking tray without any chocolate that gives you the opportunity to move things about your design and perfect it.

This week I’ve had many conversations about breakfast and how we start our day. So to mark this here is a completely American, Disney breakfast & I love breakfast! In fact it might be my favourite meal of the day...well at least the morning 🤷‍♂️😂How I start my day directly affects the rest of it. A hectic start will result in a rather unsettled day.Now this breakfast from the Plaza Restaurant in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World was one of my favourite things to do after a rope drop morning. However the Plaza Restaurant only serves lunch and dinner now. I’d love to have this spot back for a@lazy breakfast. This is also a good time to mention that I have food reviews from my trips to Disney World as well as some recreation recipes all on my blog.To find them click link in bio then tap on Disney Food.#CUBBintheKitchen #Disney #Food #DisneyFood #PlazaGardens #MagicKingdom #WDW #WaltDisneyWorld #DisneySnacks #Mickey #MickeyWaffles #MickeyWaffle #Coffee #IcedCoffee #Disneygram #DisneyDining #DisneyFoodBlog #DisneyStyle #America #PlazaRestaurant #DisneysMagicKingdom #Biscuit #Biscuits #Bacon #HomeFries #BreakfastPotatoes #Waffle

Crispy Chilli BeefThis is a Chinese takeaway classic, strips of crispy shredded beef smothered in a sticky chilli sauce. Yes this is a bit more of a treat dish but most takeaway dishes are. This recipe is so quick it takes less time than you would spend ordering and waiting for delivery. My recipe for Crispy Chilli Beef requires two pans and hardly any patience.Recipe on the blog now under ‘Fakeaway Recipes’ #CUBBintheKitchen #BrownFood #Brown #Chilli #ChineseFood #Fakeaway #FakeawayFriday #FridayFood #ChilliBeef #CrispyChilliBeef #Takeaway #TakeawayFood #Fakeaways #britainsbesthomecooks_ #worldsgreatesthomecooks #Food #Recipe #RecipeOfTheDay #ChineseTakeout #Takeout #TakeoutFood #Delicious #Rice #FriedRice #FoodILove #TasteSoGood #EatColourful #EatThis #ForkYeah #FridayFakeaway

It’s a grey drizzly day, in others words an ideal baking day, and these are another perfect thing to bake. Super soft brownie-like bites of heaven. These Chocolate Crinkle Cookies are truly delightful. They also make excellent treats for Mother’s Day which is coming up here in the UK - not that I need an excuse to make these.Recipe on the blog now.#CUBBintheKitchen #Chocolate #Cookies #Baking #MothersDay #MothersDayGifts #ForkYeah #Food #Foodp*rn #foodstagram #foodie #foodiesofinstagram #foodblogger #foodpics #britainsbesthomecooks_ #worldsgreatesthomecooks #networkingfoodies #discoverunder5k #discoverunder2k #Sweet #Treat #Tasty #foodbloggerlife #ukfoodblogger

Black Bean Tacos These Black Bean Tacos are such a great meal. A mix of textures, temperatures and flavours creates perfect mouthfuls. This is meal to eat with people you are comfortable with, you certainly may get messy. That, in my opinion, is half the fun. It does not weigh you down or feel heavy and is vegetarian.Recipe on the blog now. What does your perfect taco look like?#CUBBintheKitchen #Tacos #Taco #Food #Veganuary2021 #Vegetarian #VegetarianRecipes #VegetarianRecipe #Vegan #VeganRecipes #Veganuary #Meatless #MeatFree #MeatlessMeals #MeatFreeMonday #MeatlessMonday #Flexitarian #PlantBased #TacoTuesday #Foodie #foodphotography #foodp*rn #foodstylist #foodstagram #forkyeah #foodiesofinstagram #foodblogger #foodpics #britainsbesthomecooks_ #worldsgreatesthomecooks

Halloumi Steaks with Tomato JamThis recipe has become a real favourite in my house. Completely vegetarian and full of flavour. The different textures are fantastic and give each mouthful variety. It is also fairly easy to make. So you see you should make Halloumi Steaks with Tomato Jam, what are you waiting for? This is a true low effort meal. The amount of Jam this makes is enough for 8 portions and so if this is already made I zap it in the microwave to warm up and cook the rest and can have food on the table in 15 minutes! This recipe does require multiple pans and so to some this may not feel simple but once you have courgettes grilling, giant cous cous simmering and halloumi in a dry frying pan it’s occasional turning that’s all.Recipe on the blog now under Vegetarian and Vegan Recipes#CUBBintheKitchen #Vegetarian #Halloumi #HalloumiSteak #Tomato #Tomatoes #TomatoJam #GiantCousCous #Veg #Veganuary #VegetarianRecipes #VegetarianMeals #Vegan #Veganuary2021 #foodphotography #foodstagram #foodiesofinstagram #foodblogger #foodforfoodies #foodbloggerlife #britainsbesthomecooks_ #meatfreemonday #meatlessmonday #discoverunder2k #ukfoodbloggers #worldsgreatesthomecooks #Foodshare

FAQs

How do you keep chocolate bark hard? ›

To prevent this from happening, let your chocolate bark set in a cool but room-temperature spot in the house — don't stick it in the fridge or the freezer to try and speed things up. Similarly, you should store the chocolate bark in a cool room-temperature place like the pantry.

How do you make chocolate bark not melt? ›

To keep your chocolate bark from melting, a proper tempering process is necessary. Tempering is a process where the chocolate is brought to certain temperatures, which essentially optimizes the form of the cocoa butter fat crystals and keeps it stable.

Do you need to temper chocolate for chocolate bark? ›

Ok. I may have oversold the easy part a little. While it's true that you don't need a recipe to make chocolate bark, you do need to know how to properly temper chocolate. Whether this would be a breeze or painstakingly difficult is, I think, dependent on your temperament (see what I did there?).

What is chocolate bark made of? ›

Chocolate Bark is the easiest 5-ingredient snack you'll ever whip up. All you need are 5 simple (and completely customizable!) ingredients – chocolate, pepitas, dried cherries, coconut flakes, and any type of nuts.

Why won t my chocolate bark harden? ›

That's because your chocolate wasn't tempered. Tempered chocolate sets at room temperature and has a snap just like a chocolate bar you buy from the store.

What do you add to chocolate to make it harden? ›

You don't add ingredients to chocolate to make it harden, you temper it by heating it to a specific temperature, cooling it to another temperature, then heating it again. This causes the chocolate to crystalize in a way that leaves it hard and shiny. The temperatures are different for different kinds of chocolate.

Is chocolate bark the same as melting chocolate? ›

what is bark? Bark is simply melted chocolate that's poured into a sheet pan and broken into pieces once it's set. You can use literally any kind of chocolate – chocolate chips, melting wafers, fancy “feves” – and it will always come out great (see: cobweb bark, red white and blue bark, and almond butter bark!).

How do you make chocolate bark softer? ›

It's not a good idea to add butter to your chocolate in an attempt to soften it. The water content in the butter will cause the chocolate to seize. I suggest adding some coconut oil to the chocolate to make it less brittle.

Why won't my melted chocolate harden? ›

The chocolate wasn't tempered (or pre-crystallised)

As a result, your chocolate won't harden and will continue to feel wet. Always temper your chocolate properly before working with it.

What is the simplest way to temper chocolate? ›

Tempering Chocolate Method 1

Place two-thirds of the chocolate in the top pan of a double boiler. Heat over hot but not boiling water, stirring constantly, until chocolate reaches 110°–115°F. Place the top pan of the double boiler on a towel. Cool chocolate to 95°–100°F.

What brand chocolate is best for bark? ›

I recommend Ghirardelli, Guittard, or Baker's brand bars of chocolate when making bark.

What happens if you don't temper chocolate? ›

If chocolate is not tempered properly, the cocoa butter crystallization is uncontrolled and uneven, resulting in a dull, streaky appearance. Untempered chocolate may feel rough or tacky with an almost chewy texture and is more susceptible to melting in hand.

Why is chocolate bark so good? ›

So not only is this bark delicious, it is nutritious, too! (Dark chocolate is also a great source of antioxidants along with nutrients like magnesium and iron. OK I'll stop with the nutrition facts for now). The salty-sweet taste and crunchy and smooth textures make for a super satisfying dessert.

Why is my chocolate bark soft? ›

Your chocolate wasn't in temper when it went into the molds. The temperature ranges for proper crystalization of the cocoa butter are non-negotiable / unflexible. 120 degrees is irrelevant. Any temperature between 115 and 140 is fine.

How long will chocolate bark last? ›

If you store your chocolate bark in an airtight container in the pantry, it will keep well for up to 2 weeks. During the summer (or if you live in a warm climate), place chocolate bark in the fridge to prevent it from melting. What other toppings could be used on chocolate bark? The possibilities are endless!

How do you keep chocolate solid? ›

Store it in a cool, dry place.

When chocolate is kept at a consistent temperature below 70°F (ideally between 65 and 68°F), and at a humidity of less than 55%, the emulsion of cocoa solids and cocoa butter will stay stable for months.

How do you temper chocolate so it doesn't melt?
