Snellman Days: The tiny western Becker County community of Snellman will host a community festival from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be breakfast of coffee, juice and rolls served until 11 a.m. on the festival grounds, and local food vendors will be serving lunch from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will also be a flea market, rummage sale and bakery open all day long, and attendance prize drawings throughout the day (must be present to win). There will be karaoke (with a DJ) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and bingo (100% payback) from 10 to 10:30 a.m. as well as from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Youth activities will run from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., when the drawing to choose Snellman's new mayor for the next year will take place. At 2:15 p.m., the final raffle drawing will take place, with prizes including a "Secret Garden"-themed basket, scratch-off tickets, a meat variety package from Mills Locker and gift certificates to Byer's Market in Osage and Hugo's in Park Rapids, plus a few other random goodies. Rock Painting Class: Come to the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 3 p.m. and "jump into a new hobby" — rock painting! This one-hour, informal class will be taught by library staff. Knights Pancake Breakfast: The Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a pancake/French toast and sausage breakfast in the Holy Rosary Parish Center, 1043 Lake Ave., Detroit Lakes, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Open to the public.

Sunday Brunch Open Mic: The Corner Collective Bistro on Frazee's Cornerstone Youth and Community Center will host a "Sunday Brunch Open Mic" event from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Come stop by the bistro at 330 2nd St. NW (upper level) after church to enjoy a crepe, coffee, and some live music! Laddies Loppet: The 34th Annual Laddies Loppet Mountain Bike Races will take place at Maplelag Resort in rural Callaway, starting at 9 a.m. and continuing through to mid-afternoon. Racing categories include Kids Comp, Citizen Men and Women, Marathon, Sport Men and Women, Comp Men and Women, and Elite Men and Women. Tamarac Sunday Movie: A free screening of the family-friendly, nature-themed movie, "The American Experience: The Civilian Conservation Corps," will be held at 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. Celebrate Labor Day and the work of the CCC. This program put more than three million men in the nation's parks, forests, and farms. The film interweaves rich archival imagery with personal accounts of veterans telling their stories. Run time is approximately one hour; all are welcome. After Hours Book Club: The Detroit Lakes Public Library's After Hours Book Club will meet at Buck Mills Brewing, 824 Washington Ave., starting at 7 p.m. The group will discuss the novel, "Gunflint Falling: Blowdown in the Boundary Waters" by Cary J. Griffith, which tells the stories of the survivors of the 1999 storm in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. All are welcome, even if you haven't read the book. 'She Shattered' Women's Rights Presentation: The League of Women Voters of the Lakes Area is hosting a special women's rights event at the Becker County Museum, 714 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes, starting with a 5 p.m. social. Speakers Rita Rislund and Carolyn Becraft will tell their inspiring stories of overcoming barriers in women’s sports, the military, and navy at 5:30 p.m., followed by the opening of the new Women's Equity exhibit at the museum, which will be on display through Friday, Sept. 13. The exhibit, which celebrates progress and continuing efforts toward gender equality, will feature local women who have reached milestones in their fields. Beardsley Marathon Pasta Dinner: Dick Beardsley himself will provide the entertainment for the Friday Night Pasta Dinner held in conjunction with the 28th Annual Essentia Health Dick Beardsley Races, which start Saturday morning (see below). The dinner will be held at the same location as the races' start and end point, historic Washington Ballpark Field, which is located just north of the City Park on Washington Avenue. The dinner starts at 6 p.m., with the pasta provided courtesy of nearby Hub 41. Dick Beardsley Races: The 28th Annual Essentia Health Dick Beardsley Races, including the Dick Beardsley Half Marathon and Andy Beardsley Memorial 5K, along with the youth run, 10K and 25K races, will all start and end at Washington Ballpark this year (relocated from the DL Pavilion), with the first races getting underway at 8 a.m. and the youth run scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Beardsley himself will be there for the start of the race. Free Morning Matinee: The family-friendly animated comedy "Sing 2" will be presented at 10 a.m. in the Odyssey Cinemagic 7 Theatres at the Washington Square Mall. This is not a ticketed event; seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, and is open to all ages. Doors and concessions open at 9:30 a.m. Movie run time is approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes.

Pork Roast Supper and Bazaar: Richwood Lutheran Church in rural Detroit Lakes will host their fall supper and bazaar from 4 to 7 p.m. The menu includes pork roast with potatoes and gravy, glazed carrots, buns, salads, lefse, dessert and beverages. Cost is $15 for all those age 13 and up, $5 for children between the ages of 6-12, and free for kids age 5 and under. Take-out meals are available. CornerStone Gala: The CornerStone Youth and Community Center in Frazee will host its Arts and Giving Gala at the Frazee Event Center from 5-11 p.m. There will be live and silent auctions, music from Kyler Hanson, Damian Anderson and the School of Rock as well as youth performances, raffles, food and socializing. Toast to Tamarac: The Friends of Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge will host their 14th Annual Toast to Tamarac fundraiser at Lakeside Tavern and Brewery, 200 West Lake Drive, Detroit Lakes, from 1 to 5 p.m. The event, which raises funds for the Friends' outdoor education programming at Tamarac Refuge, will include a large silent auction that runs from 1 to 4 p.m., and live music from Dave Herzog's Island Time Band starting at 2 p.m. Admission is $25 per person, which includes a commemorative pint glass and one complimentary drink (either tap beer or a soft drink) along with the silent auction and music. Try Hockey for Free: The Detroit Lakes Youth Hockey Association is hosting a free "Discover Hockey" event at Kent Freeman Arena in Detroit Lakes from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Beginner skaters between ages 4-9 are welcome to come learn about the basics of skating and the most important life lessons hockey can offer, like learning to get up after a fall. Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion: It's the "Year of John Deere" at the 2024 Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion, which concludes Monday, Sept. 2 at the WMSTR grounds in Rollag, Minnesota. Once you pay the $15 daily admission fee (children age 14 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult), you can enjoy a full day of steam engines, parades, live music, crafts, blacksmithing and threshing demonstrations and hundreds of other exhibits at no additional cost. Ogema Days: The northwest Becker County community of Ogema will host its annual Ogema Days celebration from Aug. 29-31. Events will include live music by Mike Morse at the Ogema Liquor Store on Thursday, Aug. 29; a customer appreciation picnic at Community Development Bank on Friday, Aug. 30, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., followed by softball under the lights at the Ogema ballpark; and on Saturday, Aug. 31, there will be a 5K run at 9 a.m. followed by a Mardi Gras-themed parade at noon and an afternoon of food, kids' games, scavenger hunt and inflatables, face painting and a visit from the Trowbridge Creek Petting Zoo at the Ogema City Park. For the adults, there will be bean bag and volleyball tournaments, bingo, a car show, mechanical pheasant riding, and live music from Rick Fiedler, all at the City Park, capped off by a street dance featuring music by Rhyme or Reason on Ogema's Main Street starting at 9 p.m.

Craft and Vendor Fair: The Detroit Lakes Holiday Inn will host its 6th Annual Labor Day Weekend Craft and Vendor Fair from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31, and from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1. All are welcome to come peruse the booths.

Labor Day Sidewalk Sales: The Washington Square Mall in downtown Detroit Lakes will host a weekend of Labor Day Sidewalk Sales from Friday, Aug. 30 through Monday, Sept. 2, with vendors selling their wares in the corridors of the mall from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Open to the public.

M State Welcome Days: All four campuses of Minnesota State Community and Technical College — Detroit Lakes, Wadena, Fergus Falls and Moorhead — will be hosting Student Welcome Days events through Sept. 5. Events at the Detroit Lakes campus will include a "Make-Your Own Airbrush Trucker Hat event on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 10 a.m.; a College Stress and Mental Health workshop on Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 11 a.m.; and a College Budgeting and Financial Health Workshop on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. All events are being offered free of charge, and will be held in Room F-101 unless otherwise specified. Detroit Lakes Noon Rotary Community Blood Screening: The Detroit Lakes Noon Rotary Club will host its annual Community Blood Screening on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Sept. 4-6, from 7-9:30 a.m. each day at the Essentia Health St. Mary's EMS Building, 225 Park St., Detroit Lakes. Doors open at 6:45 a.m. each day. Cost is $40 per person, payable via cash or check (make checks out to Noon Rotary Club). Participants are asked to restrict food and drink (except water) for 10-12 hours before the test. A portion of the proceeds will go to support Rotary's community scholarship activities.

Master Gardening Clinics: The Becker County Master Gardeners will host their weekly Plant, Pest and Gardening Clinics, every Wednesday through the end of September, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the local University of Minnesota Extension Office, which is located at 1120 8th St. SE in Detroit Lakes. Bring your plant, pest, disease or gardening questions to them for helpful solutions and ideas. Samples would be helpful for answering specific questions. Sleeping Bags Needed: The Holy Rosary Knights of Columbus in Detroit Lakes are collecting sleeping bags for distribution to those in need. Anyone who has a new or used, functional sleeping bag (i.e., the zipper works) can drop them off at the Becker County Food Pantry, 610 Terry St., Detroit Lakes, anytime between 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Holmes Art Cellar Open Studio: Come join members of the Holmes Artist Collective at the Art Cellar every Thursday from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Work on a project, start something new, or just come to spend some time with area artists. Various art events will also be scheduled during this time throughout the year; suggestions for activities or other ideas to include are welcome. Free and open to all; no need to pre-register. This open studio is also held concurrently with monthly meetings of the Holmes Artist Collective, which take place on the second Thursday of every month.

Life Drawing Open Studio: Life drawing, also sometimes known as figure drawing or gesture drawing, is the drawing of the human form in various poses and levels of detail. Join Holmes Artist Collective facilitators in the Holmes Art Cellar every Friday morning from 10-11:30 a.m. through the end of 2024 for some networking and creativity. Open to artists of all skill levels; all media welcome, but you will need to bring your own supplies. No cost to attend, and no registration necessary. The Holmes Art Cellar is located in the basem*nt of the Historic Holmes Theatre at 806 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes.

Grace Cafe: Grace Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes will be serving lunch every Wednesday from 12-1 p.m. The lunch is open to all in the Detroit Lakes area; admission is a free-will donation. Guests are welcome to stay after the meal to play games or cards.

Grace Food Pantry: Grace Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes will be operating a food pantry during its regular office hours, 9 a.m.- noon Monday through Friday. Anyone in need can come in and pick up some food. Donations will also be accepted.

Farmers Market: The Lakes Area Farmers Market will be open every Tuesday and Saturday through the end of September in Detroit Lakes' Peoples Park from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Come shop with your favorite returning vendors, or discover some new ones, until 1 p.m. Vendors accept EBT cards and food checks to be used for fresh fruit and vegetables. Library Storytime: The Detroit Lakes Public Library offers weekly Preschool Storytime sessions every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Preschoolers and their caregivers/families are invited to join library staff for stories, flannel boards, finger plays, songs and more. Celebrate Recovery: The Celebrate Recovery group meets every Tuesday, 6:30-8 p.m. at Christian Fellowship Church, 28048 Meadow Drive, Detroit Lakes, to take the next steps on the "Road to Recovery: Eight Principles Based on the Beatitudes, Twelve Steps and their Biblical Comparison." Many struggle with alcoholism, divorce, sexual abuse, codependency, domestic violence, drug addiction, food and gambling addictions. Caring Cup Grief Support: The Caring Cup, a gathering of community members who are dealing with the loss of a loved one, will meet at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes on the second Wednesday of every month; the Furey Funeral Home in Frazee on every third Wednesday, and West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes on every fourth Wednesday. Minnesota Driver's License Exam Preparation: Detroit Lakes Adult Basic Education offers virtual classes that are designed to help unlicensed adult drivers become familiar with vocabulary, signs and rules of the road so they can successfully pass the written portion of the Minnesota Driver’s License Exam. DL Cloggers: The DL Cloggers meet to dance and socialize every Tuesday (excluding holidays) at 1 p.m. in the basem*nt of Detroit Lakes VFW Post 1676. No prior dance experience necessary. For more information, call Ruby at 218-847-7741.

HR Connect: The Detroit Lakes Chamber is hosting an opportunity for human resources professionals, business owners and managers to connect, every first Thursday of the month at 8:15 a.m. at the Chamber office at 700 Summit Ave. Discuss human resource topics, share best practices and review data to help attract, retain and grow the workforce for the lakes region. Event is free for Chamber members, $10 for non-members.

Baby Bounce: Songs, stories, and action poems for infants, toddlers and their caregivers are offered every Monday at the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 10:30 a.m. Program runs about a half hour including playtime and chatting with other caregivers. Alcoholics Anonymous: Detroit Lakes' Alano Club meets at 827 Summit Ave. on the following days and times: Sundays at 1 p.m., 12x12 open meeting; Tuesdays at 7 p.m., Big Book open meeting; Wednesdays at noon, Grapevine open meeting; Wednesdays at 6 p.m., women's open meeting; Thursdays at 7 p.m., Intro to AA open meeting; Saturdays at 7 a.m., men's open meeting; Saturdays at 9 a.m., Women's Big Book closed meeting; Saturdays at 8 p.m., open topic meeting. Holy Rosary Al-Anon Meeting: There will be an Al-Anon meeting every Thursday, starting at noon, inside Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 1043 Lake Ave., Detroit Lakes. There is also an Al-Anon meeting at 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the Alano Club at 827 Summit Ave. in Detroit Lakes.

Overeaters Anonymous: A 12-step program for those who struggle in their relationship with food, Overeaters Anonymous continues to meet at noon every Tuesday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes. There is no charge to attend. Contact Debbie C. at 218-234-3071. Another group also meets on Sunday nights at 6 p.m. via Zoom. This is a change of venue as of Oct. 9.
