i'm standing here at the san jose international airport because we're standing right next to the flight path. we're standing in front of it. actually, if you go about a half mile to this way, you'll find that the planes are flying about 200 feet. hi right over that encampment of more than 100 unhoused people there. and now the big issue here the city says is because that's causing some big issues when it comes to the run-ins with the people that live in those accounts as well as planes flying overhead. and that actually violates faa regulations. >> like i'm trying to throw a garbage, somebody made a garbage pile here jackson has been working hard to keep her space clean here. she says the city of san jose has been critical of trash around this encampment in columbus park. we never know they're gonna come. despite staying busy, she's one of dozens of people here who may be forced out of the encampment next week. >> and beyond the trash. there's another big reason. and how's advocates say the city complaints that campfire smoke and birds attracted to the encampment pose a danger

to planes taking off and landing at the san jose international airport. city officials have been posting these flyers saying people need to move from this part of the encampment by tuesday or they will be forced out. league is unfair because the government was put in place to take care of the underdog. and on friday afternoon about dozen people protested the sweep advocates saying san jose mayor matt mahan is going back on his word saying he's been long opposed to sweeping encampments unless residents have somewhere to go. >> that's not the case for people in this encampment. the mayor's position seems to have changed, you know, within. >> his first boat in his first media, quote, a like raiders of there's no place people to go. >> then why are you shifting them? but health advocate sean cartwright says more sweets will push people into the suburbs away from downtown. she's asking the city to reconsider its plans. so then when they show up in some like residential neighborhood. >> people are going to clutch their pearls and be like, how did this happened? talk to the mayor.

stephanie rothman joins us in studio now with how his friends and former colleagues are paying tribute. stephanie. >> tan santa rosa is mourning the loss of their longtime staple of the community pala fortune worked at the school for close to 50 years and his sudden death sending shock waves. now reverberating through generations of students. fortune was killed in a crash involving 11 cars on highway 12 on thursday around noon. he was driving in a pickup truck when a big rig ran a red light plowing into his car and several others at the intersection of fulton road. the impact of the crash said his truck on fire. sadly killing him. 9 others were sent to the hospital as well. and the fortune worked at the school from 1973, until 2019. that means 45 years as a social studies teacher and also a coach of many sports, including baseball, football and track, which is a school named after him. his friends and former colleagues say the crash is a tragede and he will

been sentenced to 18 years in prison for attempted murder. investigators say in 2022 he tried to kill a co-worker because of ongoing work-related tensions. according to prosecutors, he shot through the victim's home on the terra gardens farm. no one died. but this happened just 6 months before for farm workers were killed in a shooting rampage at the same mushroom farm. investigators say truly zhao killed his co-workers, shout told investigators he was angry because he was bullied while working on the farms and treated unfairly. zhao remains in custody awaiting trial. violence also broke out again just last month at the california terra gardens, according to officials, a man who had been fired from the farm threatened to kill 4 co-workers were laughing at him over his wife's affair with another employee. he was arrested and is facing several charges first in the nation, bill is now on governor newsom's desk. if it's signed into law. >> it will allow undocumented immigrants to get assistance from the state to buy a home.

on the values we uphold in san francisco diversity, inclusion and respect for all on its best is at time of leader for my team trying to be no arrests have been announced in san francisco. philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. >> food dyes could be banned in schools here in california, starting in 2028. lawmakers in sacramento approved a bill yesterday to prevent schools from selling or distributing snacks. cereals are baked goods containing food dyes. the bill would apply to schools. only the author of the bill democratic assemblyman jesse gabriel says synthetic ingredients lead to hyperactivity and the interfere with students ability to learn products with food eyes could still be sold in our state, though, the consumer brands association, which represents candy makers, says those dyes are safe. the bill now goes to governor newsom who can choose to sign or veto. >> governor newsom is also going to be looking at some other bills to sign, including

one that would create more living spaces spaces in downtown san francisco. the bill would provide tax incentives to encourage changing empty office spaces into homes. and supporters say this could create an additional 14,000 homes in the city and more jobs in construction. another bill. is cannabis cafes. if newsom signs that bill, the cafes could sell food and non alcoholic drinks in could host live music. similar bill was written last year, but it was vetoed by the governor. he said the cafes could undermine the state's smoke-free workplace protections. and since then, san francisco assemblymember matt haney made some changes to the bill including ventilation systems that lounges and employees would wear a respirator masks as they were working another bill that still needs a final vote in the state senate bans grocery stores from offering any other bags other than paper are state became the first in the nation to pass a plastic grocery bag ban in

start out the holiday weekend. 60's in the san francisco along the coastline. you'll find some patchy fog there giving way to a little sunshine. but temperatures going to be cooler low to about the mid 60's morrison inside the bay after the fog burns off 70 millbrae. 74 in foster city, 79 in woodside, the south bay. you've got a very nice afternoon, 70's and 80's throughout the santa clara valley. so these temperatures comfortable is getting the 90, though, as you head toward morgan hill ngoroi to try valley. that's baking in some temperatures near triple digits early on the weekend cool off a bit. still warm by tomorrow afternoon. 88 livermore, 87 and i'm an 87 in walnut creek about 78 hercules and about 88 degrees in pittsburgh. so back toward the coastline, of course, you'll find those cooler. temperatures are 10 to 10, though. yeah, we cool off this weekend running a little bit below the average through monday, but then we get into next week. look at tuesday, wednesday, thursday office and we start to talk about near triple digit heat. we start to cool down the following weekend. so yes, summer is not done with this. this may be the unofficial end of summer, but it's not the official end of summer and summer is not done with us yet. on the

southern california. the man is being charged with the murder of an elderly couple who went missing from a nudist community. shelby nelson has the story. >> at this time, i can confirm the presence of human remains. >> under the house, a grim twist to a murder mystery unfolding in redlands. human remains found under this home which had been taken apart and breached just a day earlier battering ramp right into position. police finding those remains within the bags they removed and they say they were all stopped in some sort of bunker dugout underneath the home of 62 year-old michael royce, parks. he's now been arrested and charged with murder in the disappearance of missing couple. dan and stephanie menard his home. just one unit below the elderly couple who was reported missing on sunday. it wasn't until thursday as redlands. police were searching on the property where they all live all of del ranch nudist resort. a witness called in to tip police. that sparks may have been involved in their disappearance from there. authorities tried

locating sparks, but he barricaded himself for hours in the same hole where bags of evidence were found. he did have a rifle. >> and he did attempt kill himself police discovered him. but the rifle misfired. >> neighbors knew him as sparky. some describing him as a loner. someone who didn't have many friends. one neighbor telling us that he had dug out a hole underneath his home to use as a way to cool off rather than having to run his a c a few were aware that there were disputes between he and the menard's. i did know he didn't like the menards. >> you know, he said it many times. they hated him. but i never thought he'd do something like this. neighbor tammy wilkerson says >> issues between the next door. neighbors had been going on for years. while police aren't confirming if the remains belong to stephanie and and they believe both were killed, some of the couple's closest friends know coming to terms with the loss of dan and stephanie. very very sad. >> but i do. all a good place

out. if it's true that he did do that. >> reporting shelby nelson. >> backlash at stanford university tonight after an announcement to the school is laying off more than 20 lecturers. stanford says the decision is not based on budget. >> but to restore the original intent of the program, which hires faculty for limited terms. stanford has since received some backlash, though from lecturers and students who have signed an open petition voicing their frustration about the job cuts online. the cuts do come less than a year after lectures petition for and won more employee benefits and compensation. >> well, this may be one of the biggest what sees in history. a four-year-old boy ended up smashing a jar. that is 3,500 years old. the child is visiting a museum in israel with his parents when he touched the jar out of curiosity. knocked it over. restore is now putting that are back together.
