Widely considered one of the greatest video games of all time, Grand Theft Auto 5 is an enormous game, and if players spend time exploring San Andreas State, they will come across numerous interesting, funny, and disturbing hidden characters and events. Many of these random encounters and events are fairly commonly experienced by players, but there are some incredibly rare things that can happen in GTA 5. Uncommon encounters in GTA 5 are rare for a few distinct reasons - either they have a difficult setup, require a 100% completion, or are simply very seldom triggered.
Ranging from Easter eggs to complex unlisted missions, Grand Theft Auto 5 is full of details spread across the game's expansive world. These hidden and random encounters have contributed to GTA 5's enduring popularity, and have ensured that players can spend countless hours exploring the map, and still occasionally discover something new and exciting.

10 Underwater Hatch Morse Code Message
An incredibly well-hidden Easter egg can be found deep underwater far off the east coast of Los Santos. Potentially a reference to the TV show Lost, the Underwater Hatch is located off the east coast of San Andreas, and although the hatch is cool in its own right, it holds an additional secret - a mysterious tapping noise. The tapped message broadcast from the hatch spells out in Morse code "Hey, you never call, how'd you fancy going bowling?" This is a reference to the Grand Theft Auto 4 character Roman Bellic who frequently calls his cousin Niko Bellic with a similar request.
9 Thelma And Louise Homage
One of the rarest things that can happen in the state of San Andreas takes place in the Chiliad Mountain State Wilderness near Raton Canyon. The Thelma and Louise themed Easter egg is only observable if the player pilots a helicopter to a specific location between 7 pm and 8 am. If the player does so, they will witness a startlingly accurate reproduction of the final climactic scene of the 1991 movie, Thelma and Louise, in which the pair, surrounded by members of law enforcement, intentionally drive their vintage convertible over the edge of a cliff, likely to their deaths.
8 Altruist Cult Shootout
Throughout Grand Theft Auto 5, there are several random encounters, during which Trevor can escort hitchhikers to the Altruist Cult's compound high in the Chiliad Mountain State Wilderness. However, if Trevor does this four times, with specific NPCs, a particularly rare special event can be triggered. During this special event, Trevor will be double-crossed by the Altruist Cult, resulting in him almost being sacrificed by its members, before finding a gun and fighting back. Although the shoot-out is easy in comparison with some of the Rampage missions, it is a great event and one very easily missed.
Although Bigfoot is a relatively well-known figure in Grand Theft Auto 5, actually encountering the real Bigfoot is rare and requires the player to have 100% completed the game, including having found all 27 peyote plants. If these requirements have been achieved, the player will be able to find and eat seven golden peyote plants - one for each day of the week. Each golden peyote plant will transform the player into Bigfoot for several hours. However, if the player manages to eat all seven in the correct order, a fight will be triggered with the beast and if victorious, both Bigfoot and the Beast will be unlocked in Director mode.
6 Woman Being Buried Alive
One of the rarest random encounters in the game occurs by the side of a remote road. If the players drives to the north of Paleto Bay, they may come across a pick-up by the side of the road and two men with shovels. The two suspicious-looking figures are in fact, burying a woman alive. After saving her from her assailants, the player discovers that the woman he saved is Antonia Bottino, the daughter of a mafia don, and the men were his enemies. If the players drive her back to her Vinewood Hills home, they will be rewarded $60,000.
5 Scooter Brothers Transition
Perhaps the rarest transition in Grand Theft Auto 5, Trevor's Scooter Brothers transition is an Easter egg reference to a video of Grand Theft Auto 4 uploaded to YouTube by AutumnTheCuzzy, in which the player riding a motorcycle began repeatedly shouting "Scooter Brother" after finding an NPC also riding the same motorcycle. Trevor's Scooter Brothers transition is essentially identical and can very occasionally be accessed if the player switches between characters or has just switched from GTA Online.
4 Finding Packie From GTA 4
The character Packie plays a significant role in Grand Theft Auto 4's story mode, a fact most players don't realize, but he also makes a brief appearance in GTA 5. Players can find Packie McCreary in the random event Getaway Driver, during which, if the players choose to help a group of stranded bank robbers, they will uncover that one of the bank robbers is Packie. If the player does help the crew escape the scene of the crime, they will get a reward of $1,000 and Packie will become a hirable gunman in subsequent story mode heists.
3 Finding The Prologue's Frozen Alien
Most players miss an interesting GTA 5 Easter egg at the very start of the game. During the prologue scene, after the player gets in the escape car, they will be directed to drive over the railroads, but if they disregard this instruction, turn right, and park under the bridge, they may notice an unusual figure frozen in the river - a huge and ferocious looking alien.
2 Jolene Cranley-Evans's Ghost
Perhaps the single scariest rare event in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, Jolene Cranley-Evans's Ghost, also known as the ghost of Mount Gordo, is a particularly scary specter. The player can find the phantom on Mount Gordo at midnight, but it is only observable through a ranged scoped weapon - getting too close will cause the ghost of Jolene Cranley-Evans to vanish.
1 Finding UFOs
Although they are incredibly rare and difficult to encounter in Grand Theft Auto 5, UFOs and Aliens have become a regular Easter egg in the Grand Theft Auto series. There is only one UFO discoverable in Grand Theft Auto 5 prior to reaching 100% completion - it is submerged underwater near the coast of Paleto Bay. In addition to this, there are three additional UFOs that can be found following 100% completing the game. They can be found over Sandy Shores, Mount Chiliad, and Fort Zancud.
