It’s my belief that the colors chosen to represent the 3 main characters in the game were not random but actually tell us a lot about the characters and their relationships and proves why Rockstar writers are such geniuses when it comes to characterization in this game. Blue (Michael): cool, classy, smooth, mostly calm but may be bold given certain situations. Orange (Trevor): passion, energy, quick temper, easily stands out. Green (Franklin): symbolizes something new, young, or fresh; growth, re-birth; money-driven. Blue and orange sit on opposite sides of the spectrum on any color wheel, making them complementary. Complementary, or “opposite,” colors, when placed together, bring out the most contrast and make each other appear more vibrant. In a similar way, it can be said that Michael and Trevor often bring out both the worst and best qualities in each other. Not only are blue and orange complements of each other, but blue and green can both be considered split complementary colors to orange. Green sits in between blue and orange on the color wheel (Franklin often acts as the “mediator” between the two). However green is actually is a bit closer to blue (in the same way that although Michael and Trevor are both sort of mentors and friends to Franklin and look after him, Michael and Frank have more of a special father-son bond that Frank and Trevor don’t have to the same extent, thus F is closer to M). The details and nuances in this game and its characters continue to amaze me even way after I’ve played it.
